The WHO has just announced the appointment of the new WHO Regional Director for Europe. The appointment was made during the 126th session of the WHO Executive Board, which was held in Geneva on 19th January 2010. The newly appointed Director for Europe is Mrs Zsuzsanna Jakab, a Hungarian national, was previously Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and who took up her new role on 1st February for a five-year term. She succeeds Dr Marc Danzon who held the post for the last 10 years.
In her acceptance speech, Mrs Jakab said: Europe is a unique reservoir of many innovative health policy and health systems solutions that we need to share better with each other and the world. It is my vision to make the Regional office a strong, respected and evidence-based European Centre for Public health Excellence and Innovation, with leadership in health policy and public heath in Europe.
The WHO has also reappointed Dr Luis Gomes Sambo as the WHO Regional Director for Africa for a further five years.
